A snapshot in real time, the flip side of a coin
Like an old historic photograph from a yard sale in Des Moines
It’s anybody’s guess, just where to place your guests’
Winter coats at the cocktail hour, July in Key West
Ernest Hemingway, Cuban refugees astray
Both live their life unlike your life, like every other day

An evening rain just passed, heard it pelting on the glass
A window pane can clearly paint a pure picture at last
Of the things it’s surely seen, like a slow motion dream
And the coffee pot can’t be brewed by one lonesome bean
Backyard brawls over scrimmage balls flyin’ by so fast
Try to brake on down the backroads, but life’s pumpin’ on the gas

There’s a damaged item in an old convenience store
Marked wrong in the back aisle, though it’s clearly worth much more
The clerk can’t quell the vagrants, can’t correctly count the drawer
Columbia shaped coffee stains surely smear the floor
And every day you stumble back and stand in line for more, for more

I’ve walked a million miles, and landed on today
I coulda’ worn a dapper coat, but this thrift store one is frayed
I’ve dabbled with denial, of losing chess games in the shade
I could’ve cast a different vote, the constituency’s been slayed
Over vicious views and neon hues, turns a-ttention away
The brooding bear, and mindless stare: democracy at play

There’s an item up for bid on The Price Is Right
Want it so damn bad on Monday mornin'
Didn’t know know about it Sunday night
A movie and popcorn distracts your day towards delight
Faltered and forlorn, make a move, well I just might
The sun will rise again, even pitch black can turn to bright, to bright
